No preparation is needed for any of these tests:

  • Breast ultrasound
  • Carotid Duplex Ultrasound (Periorbital Doppler may be added)
  • Echo/Cardiac Doppler Ultrasound
  • Peripheral Arterial Doppler
  • Renal (Kidneys) Ultrasound
  • Scrotum Ultrasound
  • Thyroid Ultrasound
  • Venous Doppler Ultrasound

The following tests require preparation before having your test performed:

Abdominal Ultrasound (Gallbladder, Pancreas, Liver, Spleen)
Nothing to eat after midnight. A light breakfast may be eaten the morning of your exam if you are scheduled for an afternoon appointment. For example: you may eat dry toast, black coffee, tea or clear broth.  NO DAIRY PRODUCTS, NO FATS, NO CREAMS, NO OILS MAY BE EATEN. Water may be taken with your regular medication.

Female Pelvis
Drink 4 to 6 eight ounce glasses of water 1-1/2 hours prior to your exam and do not urinate. You must have a full bladder or the test cannot be performed. You may eat any foods - they will not affect your testing. DO NOT URINATE.

Male Pelvis
Drink 4 eight ounce glasses of water one hour before exam and do not urinate. Bladder must be full for exam. Light meal may be eaten. This will not affect your full bladder. DO NOT URINATE.

Pregnancy Ultrasound
First two trimesters - Must drink 4 to 6 eight ounce glasses of water.  Full bladder is needed. DO NOT URINATE after drinking water.
